This T-shirt is inspired by "Between Silence and Death," a song by CHTHONIC based on the 1970 Taiyuan Prison Uprising in Taiwan. The song draws from the true story of political prisoners who, together with sympathetic soldiers and Indigenous participants, planned an armed uprising to seize a military arsenal, capture a radio station, and broadcast a Declaration of Taiwanese Independence to the world, calling for a nationwide revolt against the authoritarian Kuomintang regime. The uprising ultimately failed, and several of its leaders fled for more than ten days before being captured and executed.
The design centers on the Chinese character 「獨」 ("Independence"), combined with the song's English lyrics: "Fear me now, feel my words, blessed the night, darkness and pain." Together, they represent the unwavering determination of the Taiwanese people to defend their ideals with courage, even in the face of darkness, suffering, and fear.
